Louis Vuitton Cup
The Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, is used as the selection series to determine who will race and try to beat the Defender – current holder of America’s Cup – in the Finals.
The finals is scheduled to take place on the San Francisco bay between July 4 – September 1, 2013. Louis Vuitton Cup will host challengers from around the world and thy will battle each other in a knockout series for the opportunity to compete in finals and the opportunity to grab America's Cup trophy.
Year 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the very first Louis Vuitton Cup. It took place in the USA, more precisely in Newport, Rhode Island in 1983. It was an auspicious debut, as the winner of the first Louis Vuitton Cup, Australia II, managed to beat the Defender and became the first challenger in the 132-history of the America’s Cup to take the Cup from the United States.
From that very beginning, Louis Vuitton Cup serves dual purposes – No1. to determine who will advance to the America’s Cup Finals; No2. to prepare the Challenger to race on level terms with the Defender. Before first Louis Vuitton Cup, no challenger was successful in unseating the US-based defender. But following that first win by Australia II, the wheel of fortune rotated in opposite direction - the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup has gone on to claim the America’s Cup four out of seven times.
Will we see the continuum of this trend in San Francisco in 2013?
